Improved comfort and indoor air quality

A well-considered ventilation system ensures a more comfortable, healthier home.

Everybody wants a home that’s comfortable, clean, and easy to heat and cool. The key to getting it right is an effective ventilation strategy. The right ventilation can help move stale air effectively, bringing in fresh air to replace it.

Project Overview

Tools and materials:

  • Utility knife
  • Jigsaw
  • Drywall saw/zip saw
  • Electrical pliers
  • Drill and screwdriver (if installing fan)
  • Caulk
  • Spray foam sealant
  • Roofing sealant
  • Vent penetration hood with flashing

Safety:

  • Exercise common sense when working on a ladder
  1. Determine how much ventilation your home needs. There are a number of factors to consider: the size of your house, the kinds of pollutants in your environment, as well as the age and health of your home’s occupants.
  2. Be sure to also factor in exhaust ventilation. This kind of ventilation is most often found in kitchens and bathrooms, and is well-suited for removing excess moisture and pollutants from your home.
  3. Ask your Energy Advisor about having a blower door test to determine how air moves through—and maybe even leaks from—your home.
